The smoke
Well as u all know the smoke is the most head wrecking thing in the series to figure out...id like to enlighten u with the answer but im afriad im clueless bout it
but heres sum observations
No.1 the smoke appears twice to people 1st time to see into their past,and the 2nd time to judge them ecko died the 2nd time he came across the smoke and it tryed to kill locke..it has come across kate and juliet once so lets hope it doesnt happen again,i also noticed that the images of dead people are seen by people who have seen the smoke..:O:O mayb it can transform into images of peoples pasts

The smoke
I believe the smoke cloud is a way for the people of the Island to come to terms with their past and move on with their lives, most of the people on the plane were going through a very harsh life

Smoke?

Has anyone noticed that when Eko is first struck, the smoke seems to have the form of a dragon's head and neck? I thought this was familiar from something someone said earlier in the show, but couldn't remember which episode it was from.

the smoke monster
several people have said that the smoke monster sounds like a machine, or a roller coaster... the sound effect used for the black smoke monster is definitely the sound of a NYC taxi cab receipt being printed... new yorkers will back me up on this... its an annoying sound that we are all used to.

Smoke monster
Notice in episode 5 season 3, just after Eko has a flashback, there is a small puff of black smoke from his head. I first saw this and thought my mind had made it up but it turned out to be true. This leads me to believe that every thought, sinful memory, or evil deed they have done manifests into a black smoke (metaphor for somethingperhaps?) This then collects and turns into the show black smoke monster boogie man

Black Smoke
I noticed that when Eko first faced the Black Smoke, he stared it down. After it happend Charlie asked him "Why didn't it attack you." Eko simply replied "I was not afraid."
When the smoke came for Eko this time, you could see the fear on Eko's face as he recited the Psalm 23, in hopes his God would protect him.
Fear and Courage dictate this creature's actions.

Faces in the smoke
I am sure that someone has mentioned this before but, when Eko is confroned by the smmoke you are able to see flashes of peoples faces inside the smoke. What is up with that?

In "Lost: The Answers" Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof state that the black smoke is able to take forms of memories and things the survivors are thinking about. They specifically mention Kate's horse, Jack's father, and Shannon and Sayid seeing Walt.

BLACK SMOKE
Yes, I'm certain that it is Razkinski, and that the smoke monster is somehow connected to the Dharma station he's in. As Danielle Rouseau pointed out in season 1, the smoke monster is a security system defending a certain territory (i.e. Razinski's hatch). That's why Eko was killed after Razinski new the Locke and company discovered him, and why they are next.
Considering the smoke monster was in the first episode (even if we didn't see it), Lost has hardly "jumped the shark" as all the Internet haters are crying out.

the swirling blake smoke is used for one thing, to defend the island, and it was created by the dharma initiative folk, and it roams around the island so no one can discover the island and to do experiaments on the island to upgrade the human race for wen sumthing actually happens to us, thats why henry gale sed where the good guys at the end of season 2.

In The Cost Of Living, did anybody else notice that when Eko is in the woods, he sees the people he killed in the church. This could be the smoke taking their forms. Also, the knife that one of them throw at Eko, that hits the tree, is seen latter. Eko is holding it when he is talking to Locke in a latter sceen. It did not vanish with the dead.

The sound of smoke
In the cell with Jack and Ben talking, there is a moment (a quiet few seconds) just before Ben asks "do you believe in god" when in the background it quietly has that smoke monster sound? Like it is somewhere else in the complex. Did anybody else hear it?

The black smoke
Yes, the Pearl had a ? on it, but apparently is not the ? on the map, as there is also a Pearl Station marked, if I remember correctly. I recall feeling confused after watching "?" and consulting the map.
And the Pearl is quite accessable without being chased by Smoke Monster. You have to go far inland / towards the Black Rock ship to meet up with it.
