After the crash of Flight 815, the survivors realized that they aren't going to get rescued. A camp was needed to be built. The first camp was built on the site of the plane crash. Later, a tidal shift happened, causing the waves to erode the beach. The survivors moved to a different location. They built a more permanent place here. They built tents out of parts of the wreckage and tarp.

The camp includes a kitchen with shelves holding food supplies from the Swan. There are also water troughs scattered around the camp, Mr. Eko's church, which was where Locke's sweat lodge is at, and a graveyard where Scott, Boone, Shannon, Ana-Lucia, Libby, Nikki, and Paulo are buried. There was a time earlier where some people moved to the caves, but those people eventually moved back to the beach.

Karl arrived at the camp, sending a warning that the Others were coming to raid the camp. Jack decided to lead the survivors to the Radio tower, temporarily abandoning the camp. Sayid, Jin, and Bernard, however, stayed behind, to ambush the Others. While their ambush did not go perfectly, the stood victorious at the end.
Jack's group moved back to the camp after the split of the survivors. They believe that the people from the Kahana are here to rescue them.
